History of Valentine’s Day for Toddlers

All sorts of gory history of Valentine’s Day can be found on the internet (Here’s Encyclopedia Britannica’s take). We won’t go into that – but we can give a little back story on our modern-day Valentine’s celebration. According to legend – it was some of Chaucer’s writings that first started associating Valentine’s Day with cupid and romance and then during the 1800’s the tradition took off with the introduction of the Penny Post – which made sending mail affordable. The Hallmark Card Company was founded in 1910 and the rest was history – now every classroom hands out cards and gifts between students every February.

It’s a great holiday for toddlers to practice how to hand things out and how to receive gifts from their classmates. We encourage limiting candy consumption and focusing on non-caloric, affordable gifts. Coming right on the heels of Christmas and Hannukah, there is no need to overdo it on the gift-giving front!

Fun Fact: VValentine’sDay is the largest non-religious holiday celebrated on the same day around the World
