Check out our list of animal board books for toddlers. These are great board books for babies and toddlers.
What is a board book?
Before we get started – a board book is a book with sturdy (mostly paperboard/cardboard) pages. As opposed to a book with paper pages. The durability is a key feature for these books as they are used by toddlers and babies. Due to the materials (and the target audience) board books are usually between 10 – 30 pages, smaller (designed to fit into toddlers hands), and chewable (hey – better for your toddler to be chewing cardboard than on a piece of paper, right?)
Animal Board Books – Some of our favorites:
Board books are often children’s first introduction to literature and we are starting a series where we will provide recommendations on some of our favorites.
This is a great book about finding the Christmas spirit of giving. There is a whole series of “Bear” Books and this is a great introduction to the series. A great read for before bedtime.
Bear Fact: There are estimated to be between 600,000 and 900,000 bears in North America. Are there any near you?
Bunny Rabbit Show!
One of Sandra Boynton’s Board Books, the Bunny Rabbit Show! is a book designed to energize young readers. You will likely read it once to your toddler and then find yourself hopping around your playroom
Bunny Rabbit Fact: Bunny Rabbits are herbivores – meaning they have a plant based diet.
Little Quack’s Opposites
This book – which follows Little Quack as he goes about his day – does a great job teaching the concept of opposites in an engaging way for toddlers. This is one of a larger Quack series.
Duck Fact: There are over 100 species of ducks
Barnyard Dance!
Barnyard Dance! is another classic by Sandra Boynton. This book goes through a dance at a farm. You will find yourself stopping on each page to twirl or clap or COCKALDOODALLDOO! As you can see from our photo – we got a lot of use out of this one.
Barn Facts: There are over 2 million farms in the United States.
Who Am I Farm Animals
As you flip through the pages of this book, you are given clues about what farm animal is next. For instance – I am fuzzy and yellow. I can swim and soon I will be able to fly. I have a bill and webbed feet. Once identified, the reader is encouraged to imitate the animal. Very engaging and fun!
Cow Fact: A cow can produce over 7 gallons of milk per day.
Baby’s First Farm
This board book for babies explores a farm. On each page there are flaps that can be pulled down to reveal different animals. Importantly – these flaps are sturdy – after many readings we still have all of our intact.
Sheep Fact: A sheep can produce up to 10 lbs of wool in a year
